Ryerson I.M.A. Gallery

The scoop: A not for profit gallery operated entirely by Ryerson faculty and students, the I.M.A. gallery has been operating since 1990. It has recently expanded, and now features a generous and varied range of exhibitions, running the gamut from new media to Canadian and international film showings.
Good for: open-minded art lovers. Scope out new and interesting works including the art that is often featured by students themselves, which provides a fresh perspective and a preview of up-and-coming talent.
Toronto Image Works Gallery

The scoop: With its main function as a photography printing studio and lab, Toronto Image Works also offers a newly renovated gallery open to the public, featuring expansive wall space, hardwood floors and high ceilings. The gallery began in 1986 with founder (and renowned photographer) Edward Burtynsky. Since then, Image Works has featured numerous shows ranging from sculptural photo-based exhibits to fine art prints.
Good for: photography buffs. Spend time gazing at the character-driven photography of Richard Marazzi known for his revealing photos of Italy, Cuba and the US or take in the mystique and humour evident in the quirky and colourful work of Alex Kisilevich.
Nicholas Metivier Gallery

The scoop: the Nicholas Metivier Gallery has been dedicated to contemporary art across Canada and the world since its founding in 2004 by experienced art dealer Nicholas Metivier. The gallery showcases a diverse array of works from big-name artists involved with sculpture, photography, painting, drawing and graphic arts. Previous featured Edward Burtynsky, james lahey The gallery also frequently works in collaboration with international galleries to offer other artist exhibitions. Currently, the multi-layered paintings of Brent McIntosh are being featured.
Good for: sophisticated scenesters. Dress the part and enjoy a delicious dinner at one of the nearby uber- trendy restaurants like Brassai following your visit at this impressive hotspot.
